Football coaches are notoriously single-minded and live in an insular world, especially during the season.
University of Wisconsin football coach Bret Bielema will frequently express a lack of awareness about other things going on, like if the Green Bay Packers are playing on a Thursday night, for example.
But Bielema took it to a new level on Thursday, during his media session after practice.
Bielema was asked about the president being on campus and had a bewildered look on his face.
"President of our ...?" he said.
"I have no idea what's going on."
As reporters snickered, Bielema was told President Barack Obama was on campus.
Bielema looked at Brian Lucas, the athletic communications director, for help, but Lucas just shrugged.
After being told Obama was on campus and met briefly with the UW men's basketball team, Bielema said, "The shell I live in, I have no idea."
Bielema usually takes a walk with UW athletic director Barry Alvarez on Thursday, so the information about Obama being here could have come up then. But Alvarez wasn't around, because he was at a Board of Regents meeting.
"I walked by myself," Bielema said. "It was very peaceful. Controlled the whole conversation."
At least Bielema is able to laugh at himself, also bringing it up at the start of his radio show on Thursday night.
