Developer Erik Minton is seeking city permission to demolish a commercial building for five-story, mixed-use project at 425 W. Washington Ave.

Twice before, in 2005 and 2008, Minton and Dr. John Bonsett-Veal have sought to demolish the building, which houses Bonsett-Veal's optometry office, for a far larger housing and commercial project. The first effort failed amid neighborhood concern that the project was too big and the second, scaled-back proposal was approved but never built in a souring economy.

Minton is now proposing a development similar in size to the 2008 proposal that would have 50 apartments and two commercial spaces, one for the current optometrist office and the other for a health club, and 63 underground parking spaces.

The developer has submitted formal plans with the city and the proposal got a generally good reaction at a neighborhood meeting last week, said Ald. Mike Verveer, 14th District, who represents the area.
