Democratic incumbent Sen. Jim Holperin of Conover has survived a recall election against tea party Republican candidate Kim Simac.
Unofficial results in Tuesday's election show that Holperin had 54 percent of the vote compared with 46 percent for Simac.
The win helps Democrats retain the gains they made in recall elections last week in which two Republicans were defeated. That left Republicans in control of the Senate with just a 17-16 majority.
Democrats needed to win at least three of those races to take over majority control.
Democratic Sen. Bob Wirch also survived a recall election Tuesday, defeating Republican challenger Jonathan Steitz.
