Mansfield Neblett's philanthropic urge found an enthusiastic beneficiary Friday: the Wisconsin Historical Society, where chief curator Paul Bourcier was ecstatic about creating a home for a Cheesehead hat autographed by President Barack Obama.

"I can't think of anything better to represent the president's visit to Wisconsin," Bourcier said.

Neblett, who got the president to sign the hat at Wright Middle School on Wednesday, left a message with a reporter expressing his desire to donate the hat to the state. Bourcier had called the same reporter expressing his desire to acquire the hat for the society. Delirium ensued.

A public hat handover will occur at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Wisconsin Historical Museum, 30 N. Carroll St., where curators will place the hat into a display case.
