A crash that resulted in what a caller to 911 said was a minivan "wrapped around a tree and folded in half" was fatal to the driver Tuesday night on Madison's East Side.
The crash happened at about 11:20 p.m. in the 400 block of North Sherman Avenue, the Madison Fire Department said.
Madison and Maple Bluff firefighters and police responded to the scene.
"The impact of the crash pushed the driver, still in the driver's seast, into the passenger area of the vehicle," said Madison Fire spokeswoman Cynthia Schuster.
The unidentified driver was pinned in the minivan and it took firefighters over 40 minutes to get him out.
A tow truck was needed to pull the minivan away from the tree.
He was taken to UW Hospital where he died early Wednesday morning.
The identity of the victim was not released pending notification of family.
The crash remains under investigation.
