We applaud the choice of Wright Middle School for a visit from President Barack Obama and Education Secretary Arne Duncan. As noted in the media, Wright is both a successful charter school and has one of the most diverse student bodies in the Madison School District.
A less noted feature of Wright is its inclusive service delivery for students with disabilities and students who are English language learners.
For years, Madison has provided educational opportunities for all students in inclusive environments, which research has shown equips students with disabilities and additional support needs with the curriculum, services, supports and life experiences that can maximize their potential as they enter adulthood.
We urge President Obama and Secretary Duncan to look carefully at some of the best practices in inclusive education - co-teaching, improved pre-service training, adequate planning time, professional development and support for universally designed curriculum - as critical elements in the upcoming reauthorization of No Child Left Behind
These are practices that don't get as much attention as charter schools, but are proven strategies that boost the performance of all students. Until we meet all students' needs, we continue to compromise the future of our society.
