A recent letter writer suggested we consider libraries obsolete and instead provide a laptop computer and Internet service for every family. What galaxy is he from?
I enjoy going to the library to look for new books, read the newspaper and magazines, check out movies or books on CDs for long trips, and I like having a live person to communicate with.
Not everyone is computer savvy or interested in using one. More power to those who want to use them (the library has computers with free Internet service), but don't take away my choice regarding how I receive news, books, etc.
I prefer the newspaper because they print those odd bits of news as fillers, which I find interesting and which are not on the Internet. I like reading the synopsis printed in books to see if it's one I'd like to read. I can't do that on the Internet unless I know the title or author.
If you don't want to interact with people, stay home in front of the terminal. Don't we have enough hotels, condos and bank buildings? Thirty million dollars is cheap for what we'll get. Think about the people who use library facilities because they can't afford anything else. Libraries are priceless.
