I noticed that Catholic bishops were very active in lobbying in regard to health care reform legislation.
Churches get a tax exemption, and part of that privilege is that they are not involved in political activity. This rule is routinely broken.
Some churches are created for the specific purpose of avoiding paying taxes. The creation and proliferation of these tax evasion schemes has gone on for years.
It's time to realize that it would be in the best interest of society to remove tax exempt status from both legitimate and fraudulent churches. This would allow all of them to legally take part in the political process and pay their taxes like the rest of us.
Does the state and federal government have the will to do the obvious? Let's have some discussion and action on this.
