In the face of recession, our community is fortunate to have two proposals that will benefit our economy and our citizens significantly - a new Central Library and redevelopment of the Edgewater Hotel.

Construction bids are the lowest in decades, and people need work. These projects would create 1,000 jobs and over $100 million in new investment in the city.

In addition, the Central Library would provide a state-of-the-art facility important for users of the entire library system. The new library would be a hub of activity and an information center for the Madison community. It would improve the quality of life for residents, visitors and workers - all of which will help our local economy.

The redevelopment of the Edgewater would create $32 million of public-private investment in waterfront access and amenities, a catalyst for the TIF district and reinvestment in the Mansion Hill Historic District, $54 million in annual spending from the redevelopment, a regional waterfront destination that will draw visitors and spending to Downtown, restoration of an historic structure and a new public plaza with a magnificent view of the Lake Mendota.

It's true times are tough. We need to respond by taking advantage of the current climate, putting people to work, and investing in projects that will bring long-term benefits to our citizens and our city.

There is no better time to move forward with these worthy projects. The time to act is now.

- Susan Schmitz, DMI president
