As a Dane County citizen and physician dedicated to the health of our local citizens, I oppose the last-minute legislation added to the state budget barring local governments from requesting specific insurance requirements from oil companies.
Enbridge Energy's desire to increase capacity in Line 61 entails no benefit to the people of Dane County or Wisconsin. The company will hold limited liability for environmental harm from spills, such as the oil spill from another Enbridge pipeline in Kalamazoo, Michigan, in July 2010. Meanwhile, Wisconsin citizens would face loss of arable land, a degraded environment, plummeting property values and detrimental health impacts.
This legislation is a shameless misuse of our taxpayer-financed Legislature. It is a sell out to special interests.
Our Legislature is for us, the citizens of Wisconsin. Our elected officials should be acting to preserve and respect local government. They should be modeling transparency in the legislative process.
I encourage my colleagues, neighbors and community members to ask the Legislature to represent citizens, not corporations.
