I was saddened by Peter Botham's harsh commentary on his fellow Wisconsin winemakers in the Sunday Business article "Sales continue to lag for Wisconsin-made wines."

Botham, co-owner of Botham Vineyards and Wineries in Barneveld, succeeded in shooting himself in the foot.

We have a relatively new urban winery in Mount Horeb that produces heavenly wines, many produced with locally sourced grapes.

My husband and I have traveled to several Wisconsin wineries and have discovered many interesting wines to bring home and enjoy.

Usually we prefer dry wines. But even if fruity wines are the main feature, they sure leave a sweet taste in our mouths -- unlike the bitter and mean-spirited words throughout Sunday's article.

You should never be saddened by someone telling the truth. The real sadness is your defense of an inferior beverage due to some kind of bizarre and foolish local tribalism. What Peter Botham said was true, and most Wisconsin wines are horrible products created by ignorant winemakers that have failed to study the craft. Quality is the key to changing the industry to a more sustainable and profitable model and Peter knows that better than anyone. So instead of saying emotional and profoundly ignorant things, why not perhaps listen to him, and use your purchasing dollar to improve the industry?
