I find it outrageous that hybrid vehicle owners are being told to pay more in registration fees when many hybrids don’t get better gas mileage than some standard cars.
To compare fuel economy in several vehicles, we own a Prius V, which averages 40 mpg on the highway, the same as the 2017 Ford Focus, Volkswagen Jetta and less than the 42 mpg of the gas engine of the Honda Civic.
Why aren’t lawmakers asking those owners to pay an extra fee, too? By Republican’s twisted logic, shouldn’t folks who drive the speed limit, which is shown to improve fuel efficiency, pay extra annual fees as well since they are using less fuel?
It was bad enough when the federal government eliminated incentives to purchase hybrid vehicles. But it is unconscionable that our state government is now penalizing individuals for buying with a conscience toward environmental protection by making them pay an extra annual fee. This is the constant short-sighted approach we are always stuck with in this state with our current leadership.
