How insulting is it to taxpayers when they see the Republican-controlled Joint Finance Committee slip into the back door of the state budget, at the 11th hour, $4 million to upgrade a small airport that just happens to be close to a big-bucks campaign donor who built a world class golf course (code for unaffordable) nearby?
In its great wisdom, the committee found a way to tax and penalize the owners of electric and hybrid vehicle. And the money from that will pay the carrying costs for an extra $100 million the Republicans want to borrow to help Band-Aid our transportation budget. It's a Hans Brinker fix so they can try to slink through next year's mid-term elections.
That airport's new resurfaced runway will be the envy of pretty much every road in Wisconsin. Maybe they could charge the rest of us an additional $10 for the privilege of driving our cars on that runway so we can actually see what a smooth, well-maintained highway could be like.
