The evacuations and preparations for the Harvey and Irma hurricanes undoubtedly saved scores of lives and reduced the impact on property, the economy and infrastructure in those regions.
These actions were initiated based on mathematical models utilizing data generated by techniques and technologies substantially developed at UW-Madison.
Our state and national leaders jump to take credit for our ability to manage such catastrophes, yet they ignore or minimize other warnings based on sound science, such as climate change.
If these leaders claim to govern with the future interests of our children, nation and world in mind, they ought to have the intellectual and ethical courage to acknowledge and address truths presented by science. It is impossible to successfully lead a family, state or world if you refuse to recognize and accept what science presents us.
