Voters in District 10 should support Steven Fitzsimmons for Madison City Council and defeat incumbent Maurice Cheeks. Ald. Cheeks ignores the wishes of his constituents.
In September, Alds. Cheeks and Matt Phair, District 20, hosted a joint public listening session at the Meadow Ridge Library in anticipation of the upcoming city budget process. They used a systematic approach to solicit the attendees’ support of upcoming issues. It involved asking us to stand up and move to one side of the room if we favored an issue, or to the other side of the room if we didn’t.
The purchase and remodeling of a building to create a public market, at about the same cost as the Midtown Police Station, moved almost all of the people to the unfavorable side of the room. Several of them also spoke out against it.
Afterward, in spite of this overwhelming expression of opposition by their constituents, Alds. Cheeks and Phair both voted to add the public market to the capital and operating budgets for 2017. They didn’t listen.
Ald. Phair doesn’t have any opposition in the upcoming election. But Ald. Cheeks does. I know Steve Fitzsimmons. Turn out and vote for him. He will listen.
