The July 6 letter to the editor "Nation founded on Christian ideals" claims “the American system is the political expression of Christian ideals.” Yet the author really does not give any basis for making this claim (it is hardly a “truism”).
It is true that some of the Founding Fathers were orthodox, churchgoing Christians. But the primary architects of the Constitution, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, were deists.
We Christians can find a strong basis in our theology for supporting the American constitutional system, such as the belief that God created all individuals in the image of God with inherent dignity and worth, and with freedom of will. But in behooves us to provide a sound rationale for that, and not make vague, unsupported claims.
