After a six-week search for the final piece of its 2018 recruiting class, the University of Wisconsin football team finally added one more scholarship member on National Signing Day.
Northwestern (Miami) High defensive back Rachad Wildgoose chose the Badgers at his school's signing ceremony Wednesday, becoming UW's 20th member of the 2018 class.
The Badgers listed Wildgoose as a cornerback when announcing his signing, although he may also possess the size and versatility to play safety.
"Rachad is an incredible leader that loves to compete," UW defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard said through a post on the UW football Twitter account. "He has great knowledge of the corner position and has a versatile skill set. I look forward to helping him reach all of his goals here at Wisconsin."
The 5-foot-11, 190-pound Wildgoose, a three-star prospect, picked the Badgers over reported offers from Alabama, Florida, Auburn, Nebraska, Pittsburgh, N.C. State, UCF and others.
He went through a wild recruitment in which he de-committed from two other schools before ultimately selecting UW on signing day.
Wildgoose originally committed to Rutgers on April 15 of last year before interest in his services picked up. He de-committed from the Scarlet Knights on May 25 and pledged to Georgia just more than a week later.
He spent his senior season committed to the Bulldogs before opening his recruitment yet again Jan. 14. Another flurry of interest came his way over the final few weeks of the recruiting cycle, including an offer from the Crimson Tide on Jan. 17.
He reportedly took visits to Pittsburgh, UCF, N.C. State and UW in the past two weeks. During his signing ceremony Wednesday, he decided between the Badgers, UCF, N.C. State and Georgia.
The addition of Wildgoose marks the 14th straight year that UW has signed at least one scholarship prospect from the state of Florida.
The Badgers signed 19 scholarship commitments in December during the first FBS early signing period before adding Wildgoose to the class, which ranks 44th nationally in 247sports' composite rankings and 39th in the country per Rivals.
The 19 who signed in December are running back Nakia Watson, safety Reggie Pearson, outside linebacker Mason Platter, defensive ends Boyd Dietzen and Isaiah Mullens, inside linebackers C.J. Goetz and Jack Sanborn, offensive lineman Michael Furtney, quarterback Chase Wolf, athletes Cormac Sampson, Aron Cruickshank and Jaylan Franklin, cornerbacks Travian Blaylock, Donte Burton and Alexander Smith, wide receivers Taj Mustapha, AJ Abbott and Isaac Guerendo and defensive tackle Bryson Williams.
Pearson, Cruickshank, Burton, Mustapha and Williams enrolled early and are taking part in winter conditioning. The rest are expected to join the team this summer.
