The UW-Whitewater football team added a new wrinkle to its offense for the NCAA Division III playoffs — a move that is working out quite nicely.

Freshman Josh Ringelberg rushed for 146 yards on 19 carries Saturday to lead host and second-ranked UW-Whitewater to a 37-9 trouncing of No. 17 Wittenberg (Ohio) in a second-round game at Perkins Stadium.

The Warhawks (12-0), who extended their home winning streak to 32, advance to face sixth-ranked John Carroll in a quarterfinal game at noon Saturday at a location to be determined today. John Carroll (11-1) defeated Wesley 20-17 in two overtimes Saturday.

Ringelberg, a converted receiver, was given his first extended playing time a week earlier when Cam Maly was injured and rushed for 142 yards and three touchdowns on 27 carries in a first-round win against Lakeland.

On Saturday, UW-Whitewater held the ball for more than 38 minutes against the Tigers (10-2), converted 10 of 17 third-down opportunities and totaled 496 yards of total offense.

Sophomore Drew Patterson provided 70 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries.

Sophomore quarterback Cole Wilber finished 21-for-31 passing for 237 yards, and senior quarterback Chris Nelson threw two touchdown passes. Senior wide receiver Marcus Hudson caught seven passes for 116 yards.

Senior defensive lineman Brandon Tamsett, senior defensive back Bennett Young and sophomore linebacker Bryce Lesczcynski led a balanced defense with five tackles apiece.

Senior defensive backs Vince Mason and Mickey Morgan and sophomore defensive back Jon Weyker had second-half interceptions for the Warhawks, who allowed Wittenberg 258 yards of total offense.
