Junior Sam Close scored 23 points, making five 3-pointers, to lead the visiting Middleton boys basketball team to an 87-64 victory over Madison West in Big Eight Conference play Thursday night.

Middleton (9-7, 7-5 Big Eight) jumped out to a 45-27 lead at halftime. Seniors Nick Michaels scored 18 points and Davis Roquet added 14 for the Cardinals.

For Madison West (2-14, 1-11), sophomore Dayne Armwald tallied 20 points, junior Cliff McCray had 15 and senior Keishawn Shanklin totaled 12.

Jalen Johnson scored 23 points and Marlon Ruffin had 14 points as the third-ranked Cardinals (14-1, 11-1) held off a late run to beat the host Cougars (6-8, 5-7).

Blake McCann scored 16 points and Luke Malmanger added 13 points for Janesville Craig, which trimmed the Cardinals’ lead to 10 in the late going before Sun Prairie pulled away behind a 9-0 run.

Tremar Curry scored 12 points for Janesville Parker and Montae Thompson added 11 for East. Chris Galvan, Parker’s leading scorer, did not play.
