It took three overtime periods Saturday night for the Madison Memorial girls basketball team to edge host Verona 74-72 in a Big Eight Conference game.

Sophomore Leilani Kapinus scored 25 points for the Spartans (8-7 overall, 7-4 Big Eight). Also for Memorial, sophomores Daiysha Brown and Liliana Garcia each scored 11.

Senior Chandler Bainbridge scored 18 points and sophomore Rayna Briggs added 16 for Verona (6-9, 6-5).

Freshmen Kyiah Penn and junior Breyona Penn each contributed 13 points for the Wildcats. Verona went 33-for-46 from the foul line.

Senior Jayda Jansen finished with 19 points to lead the Cardinals (13-1, 10-0), ranked sixth in the latest Associated Press Division 1 state poll, over the host Cougars (7-9, 4-8).

Junior Elle Moore scored 16 points for Sun Prairie.

Freshman Claudia Fieiras led Janesville Craig with 17 points.

The Cardinals enjoy a two-game lead over second-place Madison East with eight league games remaining.

A total team effort made the difference for the eighth-ranked host Spartans, as four players scored in double figures to help defeat the Purple Knights.

Junior Dryden Schaefer led the Spartans (13-2, 10-1) with 17 points and fellow junior Ian Brown added 14 points

Senior Trayvon fair scored 20 points for the Purple Knights (4-10, 3-7) and was the only Beloit Memorial player to score in double digits.

The win helps Madison Memorial keep pace with the fourth-ranked and Big Eight Conference-leading Sun Prairie Cardinals.
