Big Eight Conference cross country teams maintained their stranglehold on the No. 1 spots in Division 1 in the Wisconsin Cross Country Coaches Association polls for this week.

Both teams also are defending WIAA Division 1 state team champions — Madison West on the boys side and Sun Prairie on the girls side.

The Cardinals, in particular, had a big weekend with a dominating victory in one of the state’s largest regular-season meets, the Smiley Invitational in Wausau.

Middleton’s boys kept the No. 2 ranking in Division 2, and Madison La Follette held on to the No. 9 ranking. Monona Grove was ranked 12th and Sun Prairie 13th.

In the girls poll, Janesville Craig fell one place to No. 3, with No. 11 Middleton, No. 14 Stoughton and No. 15 Madison West earning honorable mention.

In the Division 2 boys rankings, Dodgeville/Mineral Point held on to its No. 3 ranking, Monroe climbed one place to No. 6, McFarland remain3ed at No. 10, East Troy was 13th and Madison Edgewood was 14th. Valders remained ranked No. 1.

In the Division 2 girls poll, Wisconsin Dells held on to the No. 2 ranking behind Freedom. East Troy fell one place to No. 4, Lake Mills moved up to No. 6 and Jefferson dropped a place to No. 7, and Watertown Luther Prep was ranked 15th.

Darlington kept the No. 1 spot in the Division 3 boys rankings, and Dodgeland moved up a place to No. 1 in the Division 3 girls poll. Lancaster jumped four notches to No. 3 in the Division 3 girls rankings, followed by Palmyra-Eagle at No. 5, Marshall up to spots to No. 6, Darlington down three places to No. 7. Poynette was No. 12, Albany No. 13 and Boscobel No. 14.
