Big Eight Conference favorites Madison West and Middleton claimed the top two spots on this week’s Wisconsin Cross Country Coaches Association weekly state coaches’ rankings for Division 1 boys teams.

West, the defending Division 1 state champion, beat Middleton by five points atop a strong field at Saturday’s Verona Invitational and kept the top spot in the Wisconsin Cross Country Coaches Association poll.

Also from the Big Eight, Madison La Follette was ranked eighth in Division 1. Badger South favorite Monona Grove earned the No. 12 ranking in Division 1.

Southwest Wisconsin Conference favorite Dodgeville/Mineral Point earned the No. 4 ranking in Division 2, with Monroe of the Badger South ranked eighth and Rock Valley Conference members McFarland and Jefferson listed 14th and 15th.

The Valders boys were ranked No. 1 in Division 2, and Darlington earned the No. 1 ranking in Division 3.

Girls

Defending Division 1 state girls champion Sun Prairie retained the No. 1 spot in this week’s state rankings after dominating the field in the Verona Invitational, claiming six of the top 10 individual spots. Fellow Big Eight Conference members Janesville Craig (sixth) and Middleton 9ninth) made the top 10, and Madison West was ranked 13th.

South Central Conference favorite Wisconsin Dells, the runner-up at Verona on Saturday, was ranked No. 2 in Division 2, with Jefferson ranked fifth and Lake Mills eighth. Wisconsin Heights was ranked 13th, Dodgeville/Mineral Point 14th and McFarland 15th.

Darlington’s girls also earned the No. 1 ranking in Division 3, with Marshall ranked 10th.
