Friday was a day to remember for the Madison West cross country program.

The Regents placed five runners in the top 10 in both the boys and girls races to sweep the team titles at the Madison City Championship at Lake Farm Park on Friday afternoon.

Madison La Follette senior Josh Freitag raced past the field in 15 minutes, 58 seconds, 15 seconds ahead of second-place Max Loetscher, of Madison East, to win the boys individual title.

Freitag also won the race as a freshman in 2014 before finishing fourth in 2015 and sixth in 2016 behind back-to-back winner Finn Gessner.

After the top two crossed the finish line, West controlled the next four places, with Jack Reed (16:26), Daniel Jacobs (16:28), Aaron Letcher (16:33) and Erik Nenninghoff (16:34) rounding out the top six to help lock up the Regents third city championship in the last four years.

Led by Freitag and seventh-place finisher Bryce Doyle (16:36), the Lancers finished in second with 41 points, 14 behind West.

On the girls side, West’s Vivian Hacker ran the 5,000-meter course in 19:15 to win the individual crown for the second straight year and highlight a dominating performance from the Regents, which ended with 23 points, 30 better than runner-up Madison Memorial.

Andi Bowman came in second with a time of 19:25 to give the Regents a 1-2 finish.

La Follette’s Christine Svenningsen (19:59), Memorial’s Sydney Peterson (20:12) and West’s Ella Kunstman (20:29) also finished in the top five.
