The Sun Prairie football team placed five players on the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association All-State first team for 2017.

Six other players from area teams made the first-team list, as selected by state coaches. Eight of the 11 area first-team players will compete Thursday and Friday in WIAA state championship games at Camp Randall Stadium.

Sun Prairie kicker Alex Oakley made the first team, along with teammates Anthony Villanueva (offensive line), Khalan Coleman (defensive line), Josh Dinga (defensive end) and Marty Strey (linebacker). All are seniors.

The Cardinals will take on Kimberly in the WIAA Division 1 championship game at 4 p.m. Friday. Kimberly has won four consecutive state championships and holds a 69-game winning streak.

Kimberly also had the coaches’ All-State Players of the Year on both offense and defense in senior running back D.J. Stewart and senior defensive end Boyd Dietzen. No other Papermakers made the first team.
