Sole Big Eight Conference leader Sun Prairie (5-0 overall, 5-0 conference) clinched a WIAA playoff berth last week, as did Rock Valley Conference co-leaders Beloit Turner and Clinton (both 5-0, 5-0) and Potosi/Cassville (4-1, 4-1) of the Six Rivers Conference.
The WIAA awards playoff berths to 224 teams (32 teams in each of seven divisions). Guaranteed berths are granted to any team that finishes .500 or better in its conference (non-conference games are not applicable).
If any spots remain open after all .500-and-better teams are assigned, they are awarded to teams with losing conference records, based on a set of WIAA criteria.
This week, several area teams could lock in guaranteed playoff spots:
Waunakee (5-0 overall, 3-0 conference) is in with a win at Sauk Prairie.
Co-leaders Stoughton and Monona Grove (5-0 overall, 3-0 conference) each could clinch their berths on Friday, with Monona Grove visiting defending champion Monroe (2-3, 1-2) and Stoughton playing host to Oregon (3-2, 2-1).
Madison West and Middleton (both 4-1 overall, 4-1 conference) can lock in playoff starts with victories on Friday. West plays host to Madison East (0-5, 0-5) at Mansfield Stadium and Middleton visits Janesville Parker (1-4, 1-4) at Monterey Stadium.
Jefferson and East Troy (both 4-1 overall, 4-1 conference) meet in East Troy on Friday, and the winner locks in a berth.
Bangor (5-0 overall, 3-0 conference) is in with a win Friday at Necedah (1-4, 0-3).
Even though Potosi/Cassville is not in the Six Rivers lead, the Chieftains are the only conference team to have locked in a playoff berth, thanks to a 4-1 league record (4-1 overall). Unbeaten Black Hawk (5-0, 3-0) can clinch a berth on Friday at home against Benton/Scales Mound (2-3, 2-2).
League leader Cuba City (3-2 overall, 3-0 conference) can clinch a berth with a win at Southwestern (2-3, 0-2).
Markesan (4-1 overall, 3-0 conference) must survive a challenge to lock in a berth, as the Hornets visit unbeaten Horicon/Hustisford (4-0, 2-0) on Friday.
Both Johnson Creek (5-0 overall, 3-0 conference) and Fall River (4-1, 3-0) stand one victory away from a guaranteed playoff berth. The winner of tonight’s head-to-head, first-place showdown at Fall River will lock in a spot.
