From the start of the season through the finish, Celia Ramsey was a strong, steadying force, a team player, a leader.

She also was very consistent.

For that reason, Ramsey has been named the Wisconsin State Journal/ All-Area Gymnast of the Year for the 2016-2017 season.

Ramsey was named Big Eight Conference Gymnast of the Year, even though she finished second in the all-around to Sun Prairie’s Paige Millard in the conference meet, scoring 36.175 points to the Cardinals senior’s score of 36.675.

Ramsey qualified for state and placed 13th in the Division 1 field, scoring 36.283 points. She took third on the uneven bars (9.267), tied teammate Tyra Turner for seventh in vaulting (9.417) and was 10th on uneven bars and 22nd on balance beam.

Ramsey was one of a few area gymnasts considered for the top honor. Also considered:

• Madeline Pflasterer-Jennerjohn, a senior from Middleton. She was forced to miss most of the season due to a serious ankle sprain that sidelined her until February. But she returned to become the only area athlete to win an individual title at the WIAA state meet, taking first in Division 1 on the uneven bars (9.3 points). She also took 12th in all-around with 36.317 points and took 12th in floor exercise and vaulting.

• Krista Taylor, a junior from Mount Horeb. The Badger Conference all-around champ went on to lead the Vikings to a third-place team finish in the Division 2 state meet. She took sixth individually in all-around (35.483), fourth in floor exercise (9.383) and seventh on balance beam (8.917).

• Tyra Turner, a junior from Madison East/La Follette. Turner finished ahead of Ramsey by a hair in the Division 1 state all-around, scoring 36.733 points, and finished fifth in floor exercise (9.4), tied for seventh in vaulting (9.417) and was eighth on uneven bars (9.167).

Coach of the Year

A season after being named a national coach of the year by the National Federation of High Schools, Martha Koller Faust led Mount Horeb to a sixth consecutive Badger Conference title and a third-place finish in the WIAA Division 2 state meet.

As a result, Koller Faust has been named the All-Area Coach of the Year for the 2016-2017 season.
