The Verona boys hockey team scored four third-period goals Friday night to take a 7-4 victory over visiting Madison West and expand its lead in the Big Eight Conference.

Sophomore Cale Rufenacht netted two goals and had an assist for the Wildcats (14-3-2 overall, 10-1-0 Big Eight), who hold a two-point lead over second-place Sun Prairie in the Big Eight race with three games left.

Freshman Walker Haessig and junior Jake Osiecki added goals for Verona.

Junior Drake Baldwin had a goal and an assist for the Regents (13-5-2, 8-3).

Sun Prairie 5, Waunakee 4

C.J. Harkins scored two goals and Travis Kernen had a goal and an assist as the Cardinals (16-2-1) beat the Warriors (9-10-1) in a Ground Hog Tournament semifinal.

The host Cardinals advanced to meet defending champion Waukesha co-op in the final at 7 p.m. today.

Jeremy Werner netted a goal and had an assist for Waunakee. Drake Hamele and Travis Kernen added goals for Sun Prairie.

Waukesha 6, Oregon 2

The Wings (12-4-3), ranked eighth in the state by, defeated the Panthers (14-5-0) to return to the Ground Hog Tournament title game.

Oregon will meet Waunakee in the tournament’s third-place game at 2:15 p.m.

Madison Memorial 8, DeForest 4

The Spartans (9-8-2) scored a trio of goals in 27 seconds during the opening minutes of the second period to defeat the Norskies (3-15-0) in a consolation semifinal of the Ground Hog Tournament.

Parker Lindauer netted a hat trick and added a pair of assists, and Jack Faulkner had a goal and three assists for Memorial. Trent Bachman scored twice for DeForest.

Wales Kettle Moraine co-op 8, Monona Grove 2

The Lakers (13-6-0) stormed past the Silver Eagles (4-13-1) to earn a spot in the fifth-place game of the Ground Hog Tournament, set for 4:30 p.m. today against Madison Memorial. Monona Grove will meet DeForest in the seventh-place game at noon.

Sauk Prairie 4, McFarland 2

The Eagles (12-3-1) handled the Spartans (9-10-2) in a Badger Conference crossover game.


Milton 58, Oregon 13

Evan Schoen (106), Jordan Stivarius (152), Jerry Lipke (195) and Jordan Hergert (220) each pinned their opponent to help the host Red Hawks defeat the Panthers in a Badger South Conference dual.

Monroe 37, Watertown 36

Dakota Wickstrum (113), Dempzy Foley (182) and Tyson Welsch (285) recorded pins as the host Cheesemakers defeated the Goslings in a Badger South dual. Kolten Blome (138) and Stephen Maule (195) secured pin victories for Watertown.

Mount Horeb 39, DeForest 23

Gabo Schloesser (132), Miles Steinhoff (160) and Ky Kalscheur (182) each pinned their opponent as the visiting Vikings defeated the Norskies in a Badger North dual.

Reedsburg 53, Portage 9

Third-ranked senior Mason McMillen (126) won by major decision to help the visiting Beavers defeat the Warriors in a Badger North dual.

Belleville co-op 40, Verona 36

Max Gerner (132), Trevor Enloe (138), Justin Knoebl (145) and Jack Diedrich (152) all earned pinfall victories as the Sugar River Raiders took a non-conference dual-meet victory over the visiting Wildcats.
