Sun Prairie eyes return to state boys hockey tournament in 2018

The pairings have been set for the 2018 Groundhog boys ice hockey tournament.

Tuesday’s first-round games at various sites feature Waunakee playing DeForest, Sun Prairie facing Madison Memorial, the Waukesha North co-op meeting the Kettle Moraine co-op and Monona Grove playing Oregon.

The action then shifts to the two Sun Prairie rinks on Friday and Saturday (Jan. 27). 

The winner of the Waunakee-DeForest game plays the winner of the Sun Prairie-Madison Memorial game in one semifinal at 6 p.m. Friday at the Cardinal Rink. The Waukesha-Kettle Moraine winner meets the Monona Grove-Oregon winner in the other semifinal at 8:15 p.m. Friday at the Cardinal Rink.

The winners of those two games will play in the tournament championship at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Cardinal Rink. The losers of those two games will play in the third-place match at 2:15 p.m. Saturday at the Cardinal Rink.

The consolation semifinals will be played at 5:15 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Tubbs Rink. The losers of the Waunakee-DeForest match and the Sun Prairie-Madison Memorial game play at 5:15 p.m. Friday and the losers of the Waukesha-Kettle Moraine and the Monona Grove-Oregon games meet at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The seventh-place game is scheduled for noon Saturday at the Cardinal Rink. The consolation final (fifth-place game) will be at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Cardinal Rink.
