The Juda/Albany softball team was among the schools selected for the WIAA team sportsmanship awards for the 2017 spring and summer state team tournaments, according to a WIAA release. 

Other winners were Laconia in spring baseball, Winneconne in girls soccer, Neenah in boys tennis and Kiel in summer baseball.

Several area schools were among those receiving honorable-mention acclaim.

Laconia won the sportsmanship award for the first time in spring baseball and the second time overall. Schools receiving honorable mention in spring baseball included Beloit Memorial, Waunakee, Beloit Turner, La Crosse Aquinas, Athens, Burlington, Cumberland, Iola-Scandinavia, Mosinee, Oakfield and West Salem.

The Juda/Albany co-op demonstrated sportsmanship and enthusiasm en route to winning the WIAA Division 4 state title in state softball. It’s the first time the program has received the award. Albany also received the sportsmanship award in 2014 as a co-op program with Evansville in team wrestling. Honorable-mention honors in softball went to Marshall, Sun Prairie, Bloomer, Kewaskum, Menomonee Falls, New London, Stevens Point Pacelli, Phillips, Shiocton, Wausaukee and Weyauwega-Fremont.

Winneconne received a sportsmanship award for the first time for any sport. Winneconne advanced to the WIAA Division 3 girls soccer final, after defeating Madison Edgewood in a shootout in the semifinal. Honorable-mention honors went to Oregon, La Crosse Aquinas, Bay Port, Brookfield Academy, Waukesha Catholic Memorial, Howards Grove, Pulaski and Rice Lake.

Neenah earned the sportsmanship award at boys team tennis for the second consecutive year, the fourth time in the sport and the 10th time overall.

Kiel (summer baseball) earned the sportsmanship award for the first time. West Bend West received honorable mention.

Kellesvig commits for softball

Mount Horeb catcher Ellie Kellesvig recently orally committed to play softball at Madison Area Technical College, according to reports on Twitter.

Kellesvig, a senior-to-be, became the first commitment for the 2018 season, according to the reports.

Monroe names girls track and field coach

Monroe named Eric Jubeck as its new girls track and field coach, according to activities director Jeff Newcomer.
