A victory in the final event — the 400-yard freestyle relay — put the Waunakee girls swimming team over the top in the Badger North Conference meet Friday.

Only 0.5 points separated the Warriors from host Baraboo heading into the final event at Jack Young Middle School.

But Waunakee’s crew of Sophia Liu, Emma Grindle, Megan Pierce and Abi Schmeiser won in 3 minutes, 42.15 seconds to clinch the meet.

Waunakee took first and fourth in the event while Baraboo took third and eighth, which gave the Warriors the Badger North crown.

Waunakee finished with 486.5 points, followed by Baraboo with 470 and DeForest with 381 in the eight-team field.

Waunakee’s 200 freestyle relay team of Grindle, Pierce, Liu and Kaitlyn Wilhelms won in 1:41.48.

Pierce also won the 200 freestyle (1:59.89).Schmeiser won the 100 butterfly (:59.27) and Ella Graf won the 100 backstroke (:58.79).

Baraboo’s Mackenzie Koehler, Taylor Bradley, Kirby Tock and Hannah Vittengl won the 200 medley relay (1:52.92) and Taylor Bradley won the 100 breaststroke (1:09.47).

DeForest’s Camryn Hargraves won the 50 free (:25.12) and 100 free (:54.68), Anna Pilecky won the 500 free (5:22.31) and Haley Willis won the 200 individual medley (2:15.21).

Boys volleyball

Madison Memorial 3, Waukesha South 1

In a regional final of the Middleton sectional, the host Spartans controlled the final two sets to top the Blackshirts 25-21, 23-25, 25-18, 25-18.

Jack Krumbach recorded 20 kills, Roark Lundal had 24 assists and Drew Collins added 17 assists and a pair of aces to lead Madison Memorial, which will visit top-seeded Middleton for a Tuesday sectional semifinal.

South’s Chris Kehler had 19 kills.

Burlington 3, Fort Atkinson/Cambridge 0

Malik Tiedt had 13 kills and two blocks as the host Demons swept the Blackhawks 25-20, 25-16, 25-13. David Paul added 35 assists for the winners.

Mukwonago 3, Beloit Memorial 1

The visiting Purple Knights won the first set, 25-23, but Mukwonago won the next three by scores of 25-21, 25-12 and 25-14 to advance.

Madison West 3, Madison East 0

Senior Nick Klubertanz finished with eight kills and setter Duncan Beilke had 22 assists as the host Regents swept the Purgolders 25-21, 25-20, 25-12.

Outside hitter Sam Heiman led East with eight kills and two blocks.

West will visit top-seeded Waukesha Catholic Memorial in a sectional semifinal on Tuesday.

Waukesha West 3, Madison La Follette 0

The host Wolverines cruised to a 25-13, 25-21, 25-13 victory.
