Road construction

A section of a busy Janesville street will be closed most of next week so an old Interstate bridge above the street can be removed.

East Milwaukee Street, under the I-39/90 bridge, will be shut down from 7 a.m. Monday to Thursday evening.

The closure is needed so crews can remove the old northbound bridge for I-39/90, part of the massive rebuild of the Interstate from the Illinois state line north to Madison.

Department of Transportation spokesman Steve Theisen said the closure will only entail the stretch of East Milwaukee Street under the bridge, so the street will be closed from Pontiac Drive west of the bridge to Somerset Drive east of the bridge.

No official detour was set up, but motorists will have to take alternate local routes during the four-day closure.

Theisen said the DOT doesn't establish detours for local streets, and most people using East Milwaukee Street would know what alternate routes to take.

The access road to Marshall Middle School will remain open so students can be dropped off, the Janesville Police Department said.

Motorists should be alert for work crews and equipment in the area, and allow for extra time to reach destinations.
