A 13-year-old boy arrested Wednesday for allegedly bringing a BB gun to a South Side alternative learning center was the second 13-year-old boy arrested for a similar crime in two days in the Madison school district.

The second arrest happened at the district's New Educational Options and Networking (NEON) facility on East Olin Avenue, Madison police said. The middle school program is for students with emotional behavior disabilities.

Police were called to NEON at about 11:30 a.m. when school officials learned of the student having a BB handgun.

"The student had his backpack searched and that led to the gun being discovered," said police spokesman Howard Payne.

The student was taken to the juvenile center on a tentative charge of possession of a weapon on school premises.

On Tuesday, a boy was arrested at Toki Middle School, 5606 Russett Road, also for having a BB gun in his backpack.
