Glass Nickel fire

Madison firefighters are on the scene of a fire at Glass Nickel Pizza, 5003 University Ave., early Friday.

A West Side pizza restaurant suffered major damage early Friday in a fire that caused an estimated $100,000 in damage.

Nobody was hurt in the fire that was reported at 3:45 a.m. at Glass Nickel Pizza, 5003 University Ave., the Madison Fire Department said.

An automatic burglar alarm was triggered by the fire, alerting police of a problem at the restaurant, which is in a strip mall.

Officers saw smoke inside the building, and arriving firefighters saw smoke filling all the windows of the restaurant.

It took about 20 minutes for firefighters from Engine 9, Ladder 1 and Ladder 2 to put out the fire.

"Fire damage was confined to the Glass Nickel," said MFD spokeswoman Cynthia Schuster. "No other units in the strip mall were damaged by fire."

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
