A man who entered an East Side home through an unlocked window early Wednesday groped and awakened the female homeowner sleeping on the couch and pointed a gun at her head while talking to her.

The incident happened at about 3:30 a.m. at a home in the 2800 block of Commercial Avenue, Madison police said.

The 45-year-old victim told police the man wanted her to go with him to an ATM so he could use her cards to get cash, but she refused.

“She told him other family members in the home might create problems for him if they were to wake up,” said Officer Howard Payne.

The woman said the shirtless man, who had a bandana covering his face, groped her while she was sleeping on the couch, then pointed a handgun at her head. “He probably had spent some time in the house since he moved a purse and computer bag from where they originally had been,” Payne said.

When the victim refused to go with him, he took her purse, which contained cash and a cellphone, and left through the same window he came in.

Officers found most of the victim’s property, but a police dog brought to the scene couldn’t track the suspect.
