A Stoughton man was taken to a mental health facility Monday after he allegedly attacked a woman in the Central Library in Downtown Madison.

The victim, a 56-year-old Middleton woman, was not injured in the attack that was reported at about 12:15 p.m. at the library at 201 W. Mifflin St., Madison police said.

The woman was sitting at a computer when the man twice knocked her hat off, then punched her several times.

"She ended up falling out of her chair, and used pepper spray against the man in an attempt to get him to stop," said police spokesman  Joel DeSpain.

The unidentified man who suffers from mental health issues fled the library before police arrived, but he was located a short time later.

"An MPD mental health liaison officer assisted with working to get the man to a secure facility where he could get help," DeSpain said.

No charges were filed.
