Fitchburg homicide

A man died Monday evening after being shot at a Fitchburg apartment in the 5100 block of Anton Drive.

A man was shot and killed following a disturbance outside an apartment building Monday evening, the Fitchburg Police Department said.

Officers went to The New Fountains Apartments on Anton Drive shortly before 5:45 p.m. for a reported gunshot, police said. At the scene, a 20-year-old man was found wounded.

He was taken to a hospital where he died, according to police.

Police said the investigation suggests there was a disturbance at 5154 Anton Drive involving several men, one of whom was the victim.

At least one round was fired during the disturbance. The other men involved fled the area on foot and have not been located, police said.

Fitchburg police Chief Chad Brecklin said he could not elaborate on what the disturbance was as the investigation is in its initial phases.

He said the shooting happened outside the building.

Brecklin declined to say where the victim was shot on his body or how many times he was shot, adding that the information would be released by the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office.

No one was in custody as of Monday night, and police said the homicide doesn’t appear to be a random act of violence.

Brecklin said investigators will check security cameras of local businesses, and officers “have been speaking with people who may have information related to the case.”

Anyone with information on the fatal shooting is asked to call the Madison Area Crime Stoppers at 608-266-6014 or the Fitchburg Police Department’s tip line at 608-270-4321.
