The return of winter weather to the Madison area was welcomed with open arms by the residents of UW-Madison's Lakeshore and Southeast residence halls, who turned out in droves for a massive snow melee Wednesday night.

A tradition several years running, the so-called "Battle for Bascom" was scheduled for 8 p.m. on Bascom Hill.

Until a few days ago, the chances of pulling off the annual snowball fight were looking grim, after a stretch of unseasonably warm weather starting at the end of February nearly wiped out the area's snow cover. But a snowstorm that ran from Monday into Tuesday dropped an official total of a little over 3 inches of fresh snow in Madison — just enough to let Lakeshore and Southeast duke it out.

UW-Madison reported that the perennial "winner" of the snowball fight, Lakeshore, again claimed victory.
