ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Tony Calderone's fourth goal of the game broke a tie and sent No. 12 Michigan past the University of Wisconsin men's hockey team on Friday after the Badgers rallied from a two-goal deficit.
No. 3: UW's Ryan Wagner scored twice and added an assist.
No. 2: Michigan defenseman Quinn Hughes had four points on a goal and three assists.
No. 1: Tony Calderone led the Big Ten in goals during the regular season and started the playoffs with four.
The teams play Game 2 of the best-of-three series at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
The University of Wisconsin men's hockey team opens its first playoff series in five years with Game 1 against No. 12 Michigan on Friday (6:30 p.m., no TV, BTN Plus pay stream, 1310 AM).
UW hasn't played a best-of-three series since leaving the Western Collegiate Hockey Association after the 2012-13 season. It went 9-5 in WCHA first-round series from 2000 to 2013.
The Big Ten is using a new playoff format this season, with three weekends of games and a first-round series before single games for the semifinals and finals.
The Badgers enter the postseason with a four-game losing streak since defeating the Wolverines here on Feb. 3. UW will use its fourth different forward lineup in the last four games against Michigan.
