Sharp free throw shooting helped to carry the Wisconsin Dells boys basketball team to within one victory of a WIAA Division 3 state tournament bid Wednesday night.

The Chiefs made eight of 11 free throws in the final 75 seconds to put away a 61-55 victory over Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau in a Menomonie sectional semifinal in Neillsville.

The Chiefs (24-1) made 13 of 19 free throws in the second half and made only six second-half field goals, as the Red Hawks (18-7) whittled away at a nine-point halftime deficit.

Alex Weiss finished with 20 points, Tanner Brandt had 14 and Jackson Sveum 12 for the Chiefs. Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau got 27 points from Chris Thompson and 21 from Tyler Scherr.

Wisconsin Dells will travel to Menomonie High School at 1 p.m. Saturday to meet Prescott (23-2) or Ellsworth (21-4).

Sophomore Isaac Lindsey scored 23 of his 30 points in the second half to lead the Pointers (21-4) past the Blugolds (13-13) in Richland Center in a Baraboo sectional semifinal.

Freshman Brayden Dailey contributed 23 points. Chance Wendhausen added 16 points.

Wes Berget led the Pointers with seven rebounds.

Aquinas got 23 points from Conley Malone and 22 from Randy Jacobson.

Mineral Point stands one victory from making its first state tournament visit since a runner-up finish in 2015.

The Pointers will take on New Glarus (24-0) or Pardeeville (21-3) at 1 p.m. Saturday in Baraboo.
